It becomes second nature when you start genning after a while; so long as you can check all the details are legal (Like nicknames, location caught, what Pokéball they're in, egg moves, etc) there's no reason why they shouldn't go through. And if they don't, you just go back and try again. It's also a very quick process once you know what you're doing. Just earlier today I helped some chap with a Shiny Rayquaza; got it done in two minutes flat.
I don't know if it makes a difference, but I got this one in the yellow packaging like pic related. You can find them on eBay or some hobby shops. They don't seem to sell them in most gamestores anymore.
Also it should be noted you can only make one kind of Pokémon at a time, before you reboot the game and switch to a different one. BUT. you can also gen multiples of that Pokémon at once. How it works is every time you hit Select the game activates the code that makes a Pokémon. What this means is that by moving Pokémon around the box they are created in, you can keep hitting Select to make another one appear. This makes giveaways very easy, if you're interested in that kind of thing.
