I see him as a friend. I see him as a trusted companion I've traveled for a decade and a half with, and that has been there for me since I was in my early teens. I see him as someone I cherish, that I fear losing, and that I'm happy to simply be around. I see him as the same friend that was there when I came home from school, and now when I get back from work.
I think this attachment can be valid for a human, an animal or indeed a Pokemon.
