Lets be real, in terms of JRPG standards, Pokemon has always been a super bare-bones and uninteresting series just on the basis that its battle system is so underwhelming. That's not to say that there are no interesting tactics to use in Pokemon -- far from it, actually, -- but rather that the player has no incentive to use said interesting tactics.
Like, how can I justify adding moves such as Protect, Toxic, and Encore to my team when most of the time it's far more efficient to just spam my strongest STAB move until I win? Why should I come up with a strategy to beat a gym leader when bringing in a pokemon with a super-effective move is a million times easier? Why should I put any thought into team composition when I can just blast through the games with an overleveled starter and little else?
There's a lot of hidden complexity within the games that can be unearthed with just a little digging and it frustrates me how adamantly Game Freak refuses to do so.
