Because we are human, our eyes pick up the nuances of a human anatomy in a drawing. A layman could spot a human drawing with good anatomy. These nuances are often not pronounced in pokemon, especially in Sugimori's style.
Sure, drawing pokemon is both fun and gives a great sense of drawing 3d shapes in a 2d plane, but shirking human anatomy is detrimental if you even plan to draw like a trainer or something. if you REALLY want to get good at pokemon you would study animal anatomy.
