Will never forget the 3 crystal versions I ended up buying between playing RBYGS after my 1st crystal messed up (the second one couldn't save, that's what you get for living in a 3rd world country full of bootlegs).
I say, not having broken English sure helped after the first crystal, though. Especially in knowing what the hell your pokemon was trying to learn
