They are both kind of awkward in their own way and have problems showing their genuine feelings, but they also both try their best to overcome their issues and become better people. Considering how different their parental backgrounds are, I think it's just not easy for them to relate to each other, so it's only natural that they clash in that aspect. But that makes their dynamic interesting, and as I said, they apologize to each other quickly. They are both sweet and caring people, it just takes them a while to warm up to others and maybe they can't express themselves very well due to how vulnerable they feel.
I think the whole group would be so much more boring if there weren't any tension in between them anyway. Take your "friends" from XY for example. Didn't give a shit about any of them except maybe Shauna because they were all just friendly and boring, I found them really annoying if anything. It felt sterile and soulless, they had no in-depth personality and there were no interesting conflicts. It's completely different in SV and I love it a lot, and I wish people would realize that them having conflicts with each other is absolutely not a bad thing.
