Growing up, many of my favorite TCG artworks were clay or 3-D models. Keiji Kinebuchi's work in particular still stands out. Besides illustrating the iconic Energy orbs, he rendered many Trainer cards in his charming, bright-plate style. I bet most of you still remember the stare-down of Switch or the trippy checkerboards of Warp Point.
His item renders were always my favorite. They're so tactile. Even something as mundane as a potion stimulated the imagination; I spent many an afternoon daydreaming of the Pokemon world from Kinebuchi's evocative work. I'm thrilled that they reprinted some of his renders in a higher quality.
While I chose to talk about Kinebuchi, we could fill hundreds of threads with praise for the talented artists that have graced the TCG. Frankly, I opened booster packs to own the images. The game itself was an afterthought.
