And then it's clear they made it look like puffy pants to resemble royalty, since mangosteen are the queen of fruit and this Pokemon is supposed to be a queen as well. And then you also got the archetype of the dominatrix style character in anime. Just look at picrel, which is the main villainous of the classic anime Yatterman. Westerners didn't grow up with this shit, but the Japanese definitely did so they're going to reference it. You can also see this character's face and headdress in Lieapard. For what it's worth, there's a history of this beyond those two examples: Salamence has some basis in another classic anime, Devilman, with its wing shape and colors, and you could argue that Golurk is sort of based on "big friendly robot" characters like Gigantor or Gold Lightan from retro anime as well.
