When Carmine asks him if there's any "special feelings" in the Paldea group, he's totally clueless about what she actually means. Even after she calls him "innocent thing" he doesn't get that she's asking about romantic feelings or the likes.
So I think he's just really oblivious about romance, probably because he grew up so lonely. He understands that he has strong feelings for (You), but he thinks it's just what it feels like to have a "best friend" and hasn't even considered the possibility that it could be more than that.
