I believe the dithering on the old sprite's hat is meant to represent the cross-stitched texture it has, so I don't think dropping the dithering works here. In addition I feel the arms and hands of the old sprite look far better and, again, accurate to the design (the shirt's cuffs).
Really, I don't think there's anything that needs "fixing" with the old sprite.
