Johto did this cool thing where the region was immersive and so you found pokemo in many different locations. Some cool pokemon like Heracross and Fortress were found in trees. You got some pokemon from the bug catching contest or Safari Zone (I got Azumarill before the 5th badge).
Sentret is only found on Route 29 in the day time by the way, so if that's all you're seeing maybe play more of the game
