>>20985575It's hard to say for sure, but based on what i've seen, and based on public polls with over 100,000 votes, then a mostly objective (because i don't know the full statistics) breakdown would be as follows:
Gen I:
It depends, if you're going by actual fan favor and popularity in the franchise name, then Charizard would be the top dog; but realistically, Pikachu is the most marketed and therefore most famous. This one is pretty obvious and doesn't need the claim to be backed.
Gen II:
A hard one, but i can say with 90% certainty that Lugia is the most popular, given the fact that its movie was released when Poke movies were still big. Lugia was one of the most hyped "new" pokemon, and people sure like their legendaries. Further Proof:

This must be the hardest one. Truth is that it'd most likely be a Tie between Mudkip, Blaziken and Rayquaza. More people than i care to admit know the le funny Mudkip meem, even some friends that don't even care about pokemon, i personally have seen more mentions of Rayquaza in the Gen III vein than Blaziken, but from what i've seen online, Blaziken is pretty popular, even if i personally haven't seen much love for it. This one is obviously Lucario. Perhaps the only time barring Pikachu that a push actually worked. Runner up would be Garchomp.
I don't think i need backup here either.
Gen V:
I've noticed that when Starters aren't particularly standout, then the rare or legendary mons take the crown. I haven't seen any of this gen's mons stand out among big groups, but i'd say Zekrom, to a lesser extent the failure known as Zoroark and to an even lesser extent Snivy for sheer meme status among pokefags.
