Have any of you played Dragon Quest Monsters (Joker in particular)? They are the Dragon Quest version of Pokémon, and instead of the Breeding you know in Pokémon, there's a different kind of breeding. Without going to deep details:
>You can breed two monsters
>The parents are lost forever
>The offspring inherits some statgrowth based on the parents (so it's rarely a loss but has diminishing returns at some point)
>They can inherit the parents' skillsets
>There are particular "recipes" for monsters, like the King Slime, that requires 4 grandparent slimes, then those two slime offspring to breed into the final King Slime
>The monsters are divided into "tiers", you can never go down a tier when breeding
How can I make this feel more like Pokémon in my game? I'm thinking:
>You can breed two Pokémon, regardless of gender and egg group (to not make it too complicated and so the players have more Pokémon to mix)
>Pokémon can't evolve??? If I want "breeding" to be the main way of advancing your team, and if I want to implement any sort of "power tiers", I can't have the players skip them by evolving
>I can use specific recipes to breed specific rare Pokémon, like Jolteon being the result of breeding Eevee and any electric type, and if you mix Jolteon with _____, it's the only way of obtaining Raikou?
>Pokémon have abilities, items, IVs, moves, etc. to play around in formulas/what's inherited, and so on, so I can repurpose items like Everstone and Destiny Knot
Thoughts? Suggestions?
