Almost every other character's visible relationship with their pokemon pretty much begins and ends with them being nondescript tools of battle, the average pokemon game could have every single one of the little bastards replaced with a fucking inanimate sword wielded by their owner and the plot wouldn't need to change very much to accommodate it, so Arven wanting to heal his friend(who is a pokemon) is a big step forward in a series that wants us to believe pokemon are trusted friends and companions.
