I think it's just barely big enough for what it's going for. It would be very greatly served by being bigger and having more unique locales with distinct tone, as well as more natural progression between weather types (though I get how the gameplay mechanics force them to be as blunt as they are).
What I think is underrated is how well the Wild Area works at the smaller level in the context of the openness. What I mean is the way certain species act differently around you, creating context for where Pokemon live in the wild and even how some species relationships work (for example, Bounsweet being curious about you and coming to look, only for the Tsareena nearby to notice you as a threat and charge right at you, initiating battle). Lots of little things like this create a very palpable feeling of habitats for so many different Pokemon which I love.
As is, it's all a little rudimentary, but increasing the scale and locational variety a little and it would be absolutely amazing. Also better incorporation with the rest of the world design as it's a bit too distinct in gameplay too.
All that said, it's legitimately one of my favourite things in the entire series since it maintains all the strengths of Pokemon traditionally while presenting things with more teeming life and openness (which I love in games in general) than Pokemon has had before.
