They're innately better than vanilla DP, absolutely, removing HMs will do that. But they're so far below Platinum, among many other games in the series, that their reputation is less understandable, and more expected of them.
Anyone shitting on them is justified, and their only real purpose since Arceus/SV is for people collecting Ribbons for gen 1-4 Pokemon caught in other Switch games. There's barely any other reason for them to exist besides a lack of faith in Legends being a successful subseries.
