Why they decided to change that in PLA is everyone guess, because even if they intended it that way since the beginning, "clarifying" some *major* lore point this late in the series' life just feel like a retarded retcon.

Doesn't matter if it was always like that in the writer's mind, the idea is still stupid, break a lot of things in existing material, and feel like a late minute change trying to force it's way retroactively.
