>>47701354>The designs in Gen 1 are the same designs we see nowadays, even with updated fancier artwork.The Gen 1 designs were updated in FRLG, when Sugimori was finally starting to get the hang of the new style. RSE artwork was outdated even by the time FRLG came out. I think the Kanto artwork still holds up very well today.

Look at Typhlosion for a popular example.All of the Gen 4-8 artworks have bold colour palettes and heavy shading that makes them look great both in 2D and in 3D (in most cases at least, though some of them looking shit in 3D is down to GF's laziness). Typhlosion looks great in 2D and 3D, it just needs better idle animations (see the one used on Showdown). Look at the attached image. Sceptile is almost white due to it's washed out colours, whereas Rillaboom has a bright colour palette that makes it stand out in a 3D environment.
