Mudkip bears the most resemblance to the axolotl, and it clearly shows, since one of the most prominent features on an axolotl are its external gills, which is expressed through those orange things on Mudkips face. Mudkip is called the "Mud Fish" Pokemon, and it could also be a mudskipper.
So it's like mostly axolotl but also a bit mudskipper. I guess. Would be cool to have an actual mudskipper Pokemon down the line, though. But Mudkip is cool.
