My classmates/ track/ xc buddies who found out I was into pokemon would say how "Squirtle is the shit!" or "and the one with guns is awesome too! (Blastoise)" I even remember in one of my gaming magazine subscriptions (forget which one...I have it, just have no idea what box its in) one gamer chewed out the article writer(s) for having a picture of squirtle with a knife in its back, saying something along the lines of "out of all the pokemon, you chose to hurt the coolest one!" From all that, I just assumed Squirtle and its evolutionary line were the most popular choices. It wasn't until I started college / wound up on vp that I learned my fav lizard was the subject of all the popular hate.
