She does have to pass through several small towns before getting to 'NYC', and the fact that there's more subgroups (like Texan cowboys) in the region would suggest that southerners could also be possible, the region is based on more than just NY state.
And as another anon, said her 'trailer trash' outfit is another factor that would suggest she's from a poorer/southern area. I prefer to think of it as a cool and practical outfit though: boots for hiking, shorts for mobility (comfy and easy to wear!) and she's the first and only MC to wear a baseball cap like Red. She's probably the best designed female character in the franchise and does quite well in /v/ character design generally.
