Personally I think Pikachu was a good choice
cute and innocuous but still reasonably powerful (it isn't too much of a stretch to believe that if an electric mouse of that size existed it would be capable of doing some serious damage)
fits well in the context of other games while still being unique there (Smash Bros/Pokken)
usable in the main games, Pikachu's actually quite good early game and Raichu isn't too shabby later on
