Red is forever cemented as the "Canon" Protagonist omniversally because he was literally your only option in Gen 1.
Gen 2 onward never had that, and it'd cause a lot of confusion regarding "Wait, I picked the Boy/Girl, why is the Girl/Boy here?" if they pulled another Red.
HGSS still made it work because Leaf never got mentioned at any point after FRLG in the games, so they could stay consistent with GSC and leave it as Red again.
Though that raises the question of how the fuck they're going to represent Alola's Champion if they ever decide to pull another PWT Scenario, unlikely as it is.
