Ash starts out as a kind-hearted but arrogant kid who flies by the seat of his pants, actively self-sabotages by not training, etc., and by the time of his final episode as protagonist he's a storied champion who's doggedly kept at it for longer than most and is serious about his efforts. The problem with it all is that it wasn't a character arc planned from the start, Ash has been changed over the years at the whims of the writers to suit a perpetually ongoing anime that's treated as little more than an advertisement for the larger franchise. You can definitely point at some of the generations inbetween and say that Ash is nothing like the character he started out as, and it's not due to development but rather following trends for what a shonen series protagonist acts like.
