Yeah, the camera sucks, I don't even bother with the stupid face thing. You have to alternate between playing/feeding/petting because it's a cycle where playing makes them hungry and affection makes them bored. Just play like 3-4 games, then feed them as many PokéPuffs as they'll eat, then pet them until they make a music note. Then repeat. It only took me like an hour each to max out my mons.
