Then there was the oil. For about 30 years Venezuela was THE place to be in Latin America. A lot of Europeans who were escaping from their dictatorships and civil wars went there to start anew.
It was truly the most prosperous place in Latin America, with a better economy than China and Saudi Arabia and a currency that was close to the dollar in value. Their universities and medicine were concidered top-notch.
They used to see the rest of Latin America as uneducated, poor, short and most of all: ugly.
Then communism happened, and the rest is history. And it's happening right now in Mexico too, so our mexifriends shouldn't be smug either.
