3. One of the above except they're only produced by the government as weapons of war.
I'd personally hope for the 1st, but then you're still stuck with the fact it isn't real again. Then you'd hope for the 2nd, and realize it's damn nigh, if not completely impossible to do such a thing. At least not within current-age tech, anyway.
In short, the future is fucked. We can only hope.
