Gato is both the name for the species and the specific name for a male cat. It's a masculine word as opposed to a feminine word. Masculine or feminine don't necessary have a bearing on the actual gender of the thing they give name to, i.e. "Rana" is a feminine word and its the word for "Frog".
In general, words that end in "-o" are masculine, words that end with "-a" are feminine.
