A better question would be was when did people start hating it.
I mean it's the objectively best generation if you're comparing them by how it improved on the previous game. Gen 3 not only was a huge graphical leap but it gave the game a huge mechanical rehaul and added in several new features like natures and abilities. Not to mention the reintroduction of the Safari Zone and a better rematch system.
I remember back when Hoenn was respected but not praised as the next jesus like gen 1. I blame Johtoddlers.
In all seriousness, it just goes to show how new you are if you think Gen 3 was hated on this board prior to the "watertrumpets"
