There are pokemon canonically smarter than humans and most of them appear to be smarter than retarded humans.
So the author of the post is asking why they would not be treated like a sentient alien species who we don't have a right to own and command. This is a valid question.
It's generally agreed that slavery is a bad thing and the largest distinction between animals and man is generally considered to be the intelligence.
I would say that the reason you do not treat pokemon as equals is they are self-evidently not made to be equals.
They are almost exclusively happier when owned and commanded by humans.
Even species that have god-like powers challenge humans and allow themselves to be captured in every iteration of the games.
The being that created all the pokemon is a real presence in the world and could unmake the world if pokemon training was displeasing to him.
This is tacit approval of human ownership of pokemon and suggests he created them for that purpose among others.
