Halfway into my autistic thought experiment, I will summarize the movie as if they were ash and misty.
spoilers for "When Harry Met Sally"
>Ash and Misty meet when they were rather young
>The two immediately start bickering
>Misty is clearly amused by him but feels the need to present herself as hating him
>Ash is smug and unaffected, saying increasingly callous things
>Years pass before they ever see each other again
>During these years they have a few chance encounters
>Eventually one of these chance encounters lead to Ash and Misty regularly spending time together, going places together.
>They pick up where they left off, only both are more mature and experienced this time
>Ash is as cocky as ever, he seems to think he understands the world now
>Misty thinks he's cocky, but enjoys spending as much time as possible
>Misty is still insecure about rather inoccuous things like telling Ash about men she's been interested in
>Ash finds this silly.
>Their close friends find it strange that Ash and Misty are not dating
>Ash's explanation is that he can say whatever he wants to Misty without worrying if she'll find it offensive. She does find things he says offensive, but they never drive her off. Ash believes the key to this is that they are friends, not lovers
>Ash and Misty carry on their joyous travels, best friends, for now
>Ash and Misty spend new years eve together, they don't have a date, so they might as well spend time with their best friend
>They dance at a new years event. They joke about how they can dance cheek to cheek and its nothing to them
>They start paying attention to the lyrics of the background music, the song is about how friends can become lovers
>They awkwardly stare each other in the eyes for a moment. Misty looks ready for a kiss
>The new years countdown is starting
>Ash breaks the tension with a casual "Wanna go get some air?"
>They're outside, the new year began. They look around, everyone's kissing. They peck on the mouth and laugh
