And let's not be too rude to Alder, his role isn't meant to be Unova's Champion in the same way prior games were. He was a stepping stone for the actual popular character N to pull a Blue and become Champion before you. Alder never got the Lance treatment, he fully retired and was replaced by Iris so he clearly was never meant to be shilled the same way Lance, Steven and Cynthia were. Diantha's flop was a first of its kind since that was all Game Freak's doing while at least Iris was ruined by the anime
