People bitched and moaned about having to use new Pokemon, they said the story wasn't good (I mean, it wasn't great, but it's way better than the typical "stop evil team" deal), and a lot of other critics said the post game was boring because it was basically too similar to Emerald's and Platinum's.
So what did Gamefreak do? They said fuck it to trying anything new, went back to Kanto pandering, made the story simple as fuck, and reduced the post game.
We have no one to blame but ourselves for how shitty gens 6-8 are.
