Sob story time.
Gen 5 is my favorite generation not simply because how much I love the game, but how the game changed how I saw the Pokemon franchise as a whole. It was the game where I found my "Pokeidenity" and the game where I learned how to become a Pokemon Master.
The anime was the first medium I used to experience Pokemon back in the 90's when the craze had reached its high. I collected the cards, had Pokemon shoes, books, backpacks, toys and whatever else you could imagine. However, for some reason I can't recal, I never played the games. I think I knew that they existed, but I never owned or played either Red, Blue or Yellow.
I moved to the country when Gen 3 was coming out and it was pretty popular among my friends at school. I'd seen some of my friends playing the game, thought it looked awesome, and wanted nothing more than to play it. I asked my mom for the game, but the stores didn't have it so she ended up getting me Crystal instead which I played in the meanwhile. I played through Crystal like the average rookie: having a grossly over leveled starter, a bunch of HM slaves and fillers and perhaps a Pigeotto which was a little bit higher than the fillers. I also had no idea what I was doing half the time, and I didn't think talking to NPCs was important, thus I ended up not getting Fly and I had to hoof it all over Kanto and Johto.
