Popularity started fading because GO had no staying power. All of Gen 7 was a companion game to with no features of their own to speak of while GO itself had zero content and for many was borderline unplayable unless you lived in a place populated from Ingress-tards.
It's a very different story nowadays. PLA broke the mold of the mainseries being relegated to just a GO companion and GO itself actually has content to speak of, but the fad already died out.
