The authors said it's the closest interpretation of the franchise they wanted to make, which is kind of laughable since this would kind of screw the pooch on being for children. It also would make a fairly awkward game, and many of the scenes wouldn't translate well into the games themselves except for maybe X/Y, which is already asking a bit too much of GameFreak themselves. Do you get it? The manga is shit because they think it's the pinnacle of their writing abilities. It isn't. At least the anime doesn't even bother to take itself seriously. It's just garbage.
