>>44418604I've always wondered about Blue's original look in his first few battle sprites. The Champion battle sprite has him putting on boots and a jacket with a black undershirt, and he's clearly sporting his iconic hairdo there, but the prior sprites make him look much more like an average kid like Red. Especially the mid-game one in OP's pic. Sneakers, jeans, a light-coloured shirt with a badge of some sort on his chest, a backpack on top of his waist bag, and his hairdo looks less upright and spiky. By the time the official promo artworks for the characters were drawn, Blue had already settled into his usual design of baggy purple shirt with a pendant, and the boots and hairdo from his Champ sprite. Then the Yellow Version happened and his design was standardised indefinitely in the games as well.
