Pokemon's design philosophy has changed for the worse over the years. They used to be monster for the sake of monsters, with naturalistic designs. Nowadays every Pokemon has blobby simplistic anatomy, super saturated colors, and worst of all has to have a fucking job or theme.
Just look at the difference between Swampert (my favorite starter) and Inteleon. It's like they're not even from the same franchise. Swampert is a cool lizard-monster thing. He looks like some sort of dinosaur, and could pass for a real animal. In contrast, Inteleon is a cartoon character. It has no "cool" factor, bizarre human-like features, and grossly exaggerated anatomy.
