Lunala is not the moon either. She calls the moon. She can't call the moon if she is the moon.
If you look at "Sun" pokemon only one of them is even fire type.
Solgaleo and Lunala are "Sunne" and "Moone" respectively so they use the old timey spelling. This might mean they are not the scientific based concept we have of sun and moon. They could be the mythical, ritualistic, or fabled views people had centuries ago.
