And all this combined with the inherent online features and community of the 3DS itself including Streetpass (+ quest) and Swapnote.
XY's oddly paced, barebones campaign and lack of endgame is still a notable flaw of the titles; but the sheer ease and enjoyment of playing online at any time and anywhere with a gigantic network really softened the blow. I still have fond memories of friend safari threads and breeding giveaway threads here.
