As for the inter-dimensional aspect, I'd see that as a really good way to connect it to the concept of Dreamtime and maybe even have this odd mix of sci-fi and legend

So we could have the patterns on its back perhaps be similar to those of the whale shark, but brightly coloured and contrasting its plain white body.
