I used to be on the "gen 5 sucks" bandwagon. I never went around hating on it or proclaiming it sucks, because I knew I was wrong and it was just my opinion, but something about it felt off. I'd tried to play it twice and couldn't get past the third gym both times before getting bored.
Then X/Y comes out, and by the time I was done with it, I wanted more. I decided to try a Nuzlocke challenge of it.
Because part of the reason nuzlocke challenges exist is to make you use pokemon you don't like and gain an appreciation for them, I chose my least favorite of the starters, Oshawott.
This time, I was hooked. Even pokemon I used to hate, I was gaining a new appreciation for, and now I love them as much as the pokemon from other gens. Oshawott became Samurott, and was with me all the way to the end, and I now have a stronger connection to it than any other starter, even ones from previous nuzlocke challenges I've done.
Speaking of which, Black/White is definitely the hardest game in the series I've tried to nuzlocke. I've done one with Platinum and Soul Silver, and there really is no comparison in my eyes. I had a significantly harder time with this game than with those, even though I ultimately suffered less losses. This is not due to it being easier, but due to me having a larger understanding of pokemon than I did when I played those games (I didn't know what STAB was, for example).
I won't say Black/White is my favorite gen now, but I will say it's one of my favorites, along with Platinum and X/Y.
