Yes, thats right. I think the games have problems, but all of them come from oversimplifying things because kids today are apparently retarded.
The anime is what brings new kids to the series and what defines the image of the franchise for outsiders. It ultimately defines how people view this series and therefore the final expectations.
Now, compare the first anime season with the new ones. I'm not saying the new ones are bad, but they are definitely failing to achieve what the first season did: show a world full of mistery and a novice trainer losing, feeling frustrated, but learning. That enchanted us as kids and the anime is not doing shit for today's kids. Even my little cousins say the first season was better after they saw it in my PC. There was more emphasis in mistery and wonder than in consant happy smiles with rainbows. 10 year olds don't even like that. The current anime feels like a parody of the classic one.
What's the result? Games being less misterious and deep. Pokemon are easy to get, the game is easy to win, it's more important to show Pikachu in a cute cosplay than adding complex Battle Facilities. At the same time, new kids show less and less interest in Pokemon (they really prefer Minecraft and COD) while old fans complain that everything is too simple now. The feeling of mistery and discovery is dead, so is the need for skill. And the whole series just goes to shit and refuses to explore its full potential, add lore, complexity, good storyline, change the formula, etc
