I hate item hunts especially in romhacks with limited register slots, when you have to choose between having a rod, bike or dowsing machine as the registered item. Shiny Gold (lol) was super bad with this, random shit all over the place and dowsing machine doesn't even work.
I'd much rather an empty patch of grass or a tree stump stick out from the environment if you want to give the player a hidden item. Most of the time I'd just hide important items like TMs behind puzzles as overworld items.
Other times the geographical detail could signify that the spot was used for evolution, some other timed reward or as a spot to catch different Pokemon from the rest of the route.
