Even if not copying Colosseum's formula, I want them to grab the core of Pokémon's mechanics and create a spin-off that employs them in different ways for a completely different experience.
Having all battles be double battles might sound silly and forced but it actually changed everything.
>>38441436XD has a lot of content and QoL additions, but otherwise is a weaker game. Not only because by being a sequel it rehashes old ideas, but because it doesn't have the coherence that colo did.
The region of Orre was created for a grittier even though still kinda goofy take on the pokémon world (kinda reminds me of Star Wars?) and the region was supposed to be unhospitable [arguably Agate Village doesn't fit, but by being so welcoming and having celebi's altar it's obviously supposed to be a healing oasis in an arid region].
Colosseum stuck to this; locations, themes, mechanics and characters all fit nicely into the tone they wanted to set.
XD went and introduced a los of elements and shades more relevant to the mainline games in its characters and newer locations. They even turned the mystical aspects of darkness and purification into convenient computer programs , a robbery machine into lab gear and had whatever the hell pic related is as its MC.
They just don't fit that well and while mechanically XD might be easier to play it isn't as immersive and whole as Colosseum.
