Oldfags who play old gens find their metas as they stand fun, so they don't want to change things even if it makes their old formats less approachable, because they're the ones who actually play and it's what they find fun.
People didn't find mons like Archaludon, Gouging Fire, or Volcarona fun to deal with, so they got suspected and banned. The basis for all bans in any competitive game is what the actual players find fun, more than anything, especially something grassroots like omgon.
The quickbans this gen have been really poorly handled and heavy handed, that I can agree with, but quickbans are basically always controversial.
