The 1-2 punch of X/Y and OR/AS sold a lot more than the S/M US/UM combo, even though the latter launched at the same time Pokemon became a global phenomena again thanks to Pokemon Go. The first game in a console's lifespan always generates more hype. Even if the next Pokemon Game on Switch somehow manages to miraculously be pretty good, it won't sell as much as SW/SH because the POKEMON ON SWITCH OMG! novelty is gone. That's just how it is.
