A lot of people thought it wouldn't even count as a mainline game because when the DS first came out it wasn't considered a successor to the GBA but a 'third pillar'
What got everyone really hyped was when the first screenshots were revealed and the visible day/night cycle was back. Everyone was disappointed with the graphics though.
Also everyone was freaking out about the physical/special split, compfags were pissed because Alakazam was gonna have its elemental punches nerfed, and there was a lot of debate over whether Earthquake would count as a physical or special move.
