The book is the professor's personal copy with their ID inside it. It's not book itself that's important.
The protection protocol was made because the professor didn't want it turned off so in the event that someone turned out off it was prevented.
The AI went back in time with the book because it's the final failsafe and programmed to restart the machine in the event it is turned off and without the ID the key to turning it on is gone making it harder for anyone to restart.
ALL of this is in the game and it just goes to show that you've fucking rotted your attention span over the years.
