Unova is more in line with how Gens 1-4 operated regional dex wise. You had some mons who had that Japanese aesthetic, but it was never that overt aside from how Johto was presented, and even then the dex of that region wasn't really a Japanese advertisement.
If Unova debuted today, it likely would be just a 1:1 Poke version of NYC with more expressions of American culture, though it's worth noting there were other examples of that other than just Trubbish, such as Pidove, Scraggy, and Vanillite.
